According to a declassified intelligence assessment, around 13,000 Russians have been killed or wounded in two months of attacks on the Ukrainian garrison in Avdiivka, while Ukrainian forces suffered nearly 200,000 killed and wounded in the same period. Despite the staggering losses, Russia has not made significant advances in Ukraine since the start of the wider war. The Russian military, with a total of 2.9 million people at the outset of the war, has suffered a total of 315,000 casualties after 22 months of major fighting. However, the high casualties have not undermined the war effort as Russia can draft hundreds of thousands of men without facing opposition due to its authoritarian regime.
