Supreme Court Upholds Voting Rights in Alabama and Offers Hope to Other States

The Supreme Court has ordered Alabama to create a second Black-majority congressional district, overturning a GOP-drawn voting map that was challenged by Black voters. The decision gives new life to the Voting Rights Act after recent decisions have reduced protections for minority voters who historically have sided with Democrats. Alabama's population is 27% Black, but the state's GOP-controlled legislature provided just one of the seven districts with a majority Black population.
