Ancient Lunar Region Revealed: Imaging a 4-Billion-Year-Old Moon

A photograph of the Moon's Mare Imbrium lava plain, taken by Katie using a Celestron NexStar 8-inch telescope, showcases the large semi-circle formed when a proto-planet struck the Moon about 3.9 billion years ago. The image also features the 101 km diameter Plato crater, with long shadows cast by the mountainous terrain on its eastern rim. Katie stumbled upon this interesting area while trying to focus her telescope, highlighting the serendipitous nature of astronomy.
