James Webb Telescope Reveals Surprising Discoveries in Deep Space

The James Webb Space Telescope has captured images of a distant star-forming galaxy, GN20, which is in the midst of a starburst, possibly caused by a collision with another galaxy. The galaxy is located in a region of space called a protocluster and is forming stars at a rate of around 1,860 times the mass of the sun each year. The JWST's ability to see the universe in infrared wavelengths makes it ideal for peering beyond the dense clouds of dust and gas surrounding star-forming galaxies. The observations showed that GN20 has a concentrated bright nucleus of densely clustered stars at its core surrounded by a diffuse envelope of gas, and its center of gas is off-center in relation to its dense nucleus of stars, implying that it has recently undergone an encounter with another galaxy.
