Scientists at Bangor University have developed tiny nuclear fuel pellets called triso fuel, which are the size of poppy seeds and can power a small car-sized reactor by Rolls Royce. The university believes that this reactor has applications for lunar bases, Earth, and even rockets due to its small size. Triso fuel, developed in the 1960s, is considered the most robust nuclear fuel on Earth and consists of a uranium, carbon, and oxygen kernel surrounded by three layers of carbon- and ceramic-based materials. The self-containment system of the pellets prevents the release of radioactive material even under extreme heat.
