Improving Asteroid Defense: Enhancing Efficiency in Moving 'Rubble Pile' Threats

The composition of asteroids, particularly rubble piles, has posed a challenge for planetary defense. While the kinetic impact method has been successful in deflecting asteroids, it may cause disruption and blast the object apart when dealing with rubble piles. One potential solution is ion beam deflection, which spreads the power out over a longer period of time and works on rubble piles regardless of their strength or composition. The Gravity Tractor, which uses a spacecraft's gravitational field to deflect asteroids, is also being studied. However, the political and sociological aspects of asteroid defense, as well as the need for international cooperation, still need to be addressed.
