Quantum Swapper Test Reveals Exponential Edge Over Classical Computers

Researchers devised a complement-sampling game to test quantum hardware and prove a provable exponential gap between the best classical strategies and an ideal quantum system. Using Quantinuum’s trapped-ion H2 computers, they scaled the test to as many as 37-bit strings, and showed the quantum approach consistently beating the classical limit despite hardware noise, thanks to quantum superposition and a novel swapper circuit. The study offers a scalable, verification-friendly proof of quantum advantage, though the referee and player were on the same machine; future work will connect separate quantum devices over a quantum channel.
