Sony expands AI music copyright battle with Udio over 30,000 songs

Sony Music Entertainment has filed a new lawsuit against Udio, accusing its AI music generator of infringing the copyrights of more than 30,000 Sony songs—an amount the company says could grow. The filing references the 2024 suits by Sony, UMG and Warner against Suno/Udio and notes that Sony sought to add tens of thousands more works after discovering training data, using an “audio fingerprinting” approach; a judge previously limited the original case to 333 songs. With UMG and Warner having settled and partnered with Udio, Sony is pursuing blocking orders and up to $150,000 per infringing work.
