China-Russia Trade: Profits, Limits, and Murky Depths

China is profiting from its close economic relationship with Russia, which has been strengthened by Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Trade between the two countries has surpassed $200 billion this year, with China becoming the world's largest car exporter. Chinese car manufacturers have grabbed 55% of the Russian market, filling the gap left by European manufacturers who pulled out due to sanctions. China has also become a substitute supplier for Russia, selling goods such as cars, trucks, and consumer goods, while Russia sells oil and natural gas to China at discounted prices. The two countries are also building infrastructure, including pipelines, to facilitate energy trade.
