Mapping the Middle Class: The Best and Worst Standard of Living

Middle- and working-class families in some of the most expensive U.S. cities are experiencing the best standard of living, according to an economic analysis by the Ludwig Institute for Shared Economic Prosperity (LISEP). Despite the high cost of living, these regions offer higher-than-typical wages, with the Bay Area being the best performing region for middle- and working-class families. However, about 6 in 10 Americans are failing to meet their basic needs, highlighting the struggles many households face due to rising inflation. The analysis emphasizes the importance of examining wages and the cost of living at a regional level, as it reveals disparities in job opportunities. The impact of inflation on low- and middle-class Americans is not accurately captured by the national measure of inflation, the Consumer Price Index (CPI), which fails to reflect their experiences.
