Six young Portuguese people have filed a lawsuit against 32 governments, including all EU member states, accusing them of insufficient action on climate change and failing to reduce greenhouse gas emissions enough to meet the Paris Agreement target. The case, the first of its kind at the European Court of Human Rights, argues that the forest fires in Portugal since 2017 are a direct result of global warming and violate the claimants' fundamental human rights. The governments argue that the claimants have not sufficiently established a direct consequence of climate change or the wildfires. A ruling in favor of the claimants would legally bind the governments to increase climate actions and influence domestic courts on climate change-related cases.
