Scientists have accidentally discovered a strain of bacteria, TC1, that can prevent the transmission of malaria from mosquitoes to humans. The bacteria secretes a molecule called harmane, which inhibits the growth of the malaria parasite in the mosquito's gut. Trials are currently underway to assess the safety and effectiveness of using harmane at scale. Malaria kills approximately 600,000 people annually, and this discovery could provide a new tool in the fight against the disease.
