Uncovering the Link Between Long COVID and Hormone Levels

A new study has identified a potential pattern behind long COVID, suggesting that reduced levels of serotonin, a chemical messenger, may be linked to cognitive difficulties and memory loss reported by long haulers. The study found that long COVID patients had depleted levels of serotonin and shed remnants of viral particles in their stools. The researchers proposed a pathway connecting a lack of serotonin in the gut to its effects in the brain, involving lingering viral material triggering immune responses, inflammation, and impaired vagus nerve activity. Animal studies showed that restoring serotonin levels improved memory impairments caused by low serotonin and reduced vagus nerve activity. Further research is needed to validate these findings and develop new tools for the diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment of long COVID.
