Wegovy and Semaglutide: Promising Heart Benefits Revealed in New Studies

Novo Nordisk's weight loss drug Wegovy has been found to reduce the risk of serious heart problems, such as heart attack, stroke, or death, by 20% in certain patients, according to a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine. The study, funded by Novo Nordisk, involved over 17,600 adults with cardiovascular disease who were overweight or obese but did not have diabetes. The results showed that Wegovy reduced the risk of heart attacks by 28%, stroke by 8%, and death from any cause by 19%. The drug, approved by the FDA in 2021, is seen as a game changer in treating overweight or obese patients with cardiovascular disease. Novo Nordisk has filed for a label update to include the indication for reducing the risk of major adverse cardiovascular events, and a decision is expected in 2024.
