G20 Summit Concludes with Success and Hope for Ukraine
The G20 summit concluded with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the diplomatic spotlight, as the leaders downplayed divisions over the war in Ukraine and climate change. Despite efforts to reach a common statement denouncing the use of force for territorial gain, direct criticism of Russia was avoided. The summit failed to agree on a phase-out of fossil fuels, instead backing a target of tripling global renewable energy capacity by 2030. Modi celebrated the accession of the African Union to the G20 and proposed another leaders' meeting in November. Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva stated that Putin would be free to attend next year's event in Rio de Janeiro, despite an ICC warrant for his arrest.
