Decoding the Complexities of Hippocampal Memory Codes

Researchers have identified two distinct memory functions in the hippocampus: associative memory and predictive memory. Using optogenetics, they were able to manipulate one memory function while leaving the other intact in rats. This discovery has implications for understanding and treating memory and navigational deficits seen in dementia and Alzheimer's disease. By targeting the disrupted neural mechanism, more targeted interventions can be developed.
