Scientists analyzing the sample collected from the near-Earth asteroid Bennu during NASA's OSIRIS-REx mission have discovered an unexpected abundance of dark, fine-grained material on the inside of the sample container. This debris, found before reaching the bulk of the sample, could provide valuable insights about the asteroid. The initial analysis using scanning electron microscopes, X-rays, and infrared instruments will help determine the sample's chemical composition, presence of hydrated minerals or organic particles, and abundance of specific minerals. The findings could shed light on the origins of our solar system and the potential threat posed by near-Earth asteroids. The actual asteroid sample will be revealed on October 11.
