Garden dig uncovers Denmark’s largest Viking silver hoard

A backyard dig in Rebild, Denmark, uncovered around 700 Viking Age silver objects totaling 18.5 kilograms, including a vesselsful of 320 items still in their original clay container. The find also includes bracelets, silver bars, and coins—Arab and Anglo-Saxon—with a runic-inscribed silver bar suggesting ownership marks. The hoard, Denmark’s largest of its kind, is being assessed by the National Museum and may be displayed permanently at Fyrkat Viking Museum, with no large excavation planned due to the built-up site.
