COP28 Summit Urged to Break the 'Deadly Cycle' of Climate Change

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has warned of the dangers of sea level rise caused by melting glaciers and called for urgent action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions at the upcoming COP28 climate summit in Dubai. The conference aims to address the widening emissions gap, increase adaptation finance, operationalize the loss and damage fund, and boost climate finance. While progress has been made in reducing emissions, deforestation and methane levels continue to rise. The United States, led by special presidential climate envoy John Kerry, is taking a leading role in the summit, committing to tripling global renewable energy capacity and halting deforestation by 2030. Contentious issues include funding for climate adaptation and the phasing out of fossil fuels.
