"Oil Company Leader Urges Global Action on Emissions at Climate Talks"

The head of this year's United Nations climate talks, Sultan al-Jaber, who also heads one of the United Arab Emirates' state oil companies, called for urgent action to curb greenhouse gas emissions in all regions and sectors to prevent the planet from surpassing a key temperature limit agreed upon over seven years ago. Al-Jaber emphasized the need to address all emissions, including those resulting from fossil fuel consumption, and urged governments to set more ambitious targets for cutting emissions. While some climate campaigners welcomed the plan, others expressed concern that terms like "unabated fossil fuels" and "clean energy solutions" could allow loopholes for continued oil and gas production. Al-Jaber also stressed the importance of increasing renewable energy production and providing funds to help developing countries transition away from polluting fuels and cope with climate change impacts.
