Investigation reveals higher death toll in Ukraine air strike, Putin blames alcohol abuse for Russian army losses.

An investigation by RFE/RL's Idel.Realities has identified by name 140 Russian soldiers killed in a Ukrainian rocket attack on a trade-school dormitory in Makiyivka on January 1, 2023, which Moscow initially reported as 63 deaths and later raised to 89. Most of those killed were mobilized after President Vladimir Putin ordered a military call-up in late September. The Russian government has released little information about its war casualties, with Western experts putting the total number of Russian killed and wounded at over 200,000.
