Colombia's Deforestation Rate Plunges by 29% Amid Peace Efforts

Deforestation in Colombia's Amazon rainforest has seen a significant decline, with a 26% reduction in the Colombian Amazon and a 29% reduction nationwide last year, according to government figures. The decrease in deforestation is attributed to the peace process with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (Farc), which has put the environment at the center of negotiations. The peace agreement has allowed for the protection of 50,000 hectares of forest in 2022, marking the highest reduction in deforestation and forest fires in two decades. The Colombian government is now focusing on further initiatives to restore the rainforest, including monthly payments for farmers who refrain from clearing trees and training in harvesting Amazonian fruits.
