Rising global temperatures are making air conditioning a necessity rather than a luxury in many parts of Europe, despite a cultural resistance to its use. While air conditioning penetration in Europe has increased from 10% in 2000 to 19% in 2021, it still lags far behind the United States at around 90%. Europeans have traditionally relied on alternative methods to cope with heat, such as fans, shading buildings, and taking siestas. However, as temperatures continue to rise, the demand for air conditioning is growing, albeit reluctantly, due to concerns about cost, environmental impact, and health effects.
