Significant Drop in Deforestation Rates in Brazil's Amazon

Deforestation in Brazil's Amazon dropped by 66.11% in August, reaching its lowest level for the month since 2018, according to satellite data from the Brazilian space research agency. The cumulative deforestation rate for the first eight months of the year is down by 48% compared to the same period in 2022. President Lula celebrated the decline and signed the demarcation of two new Indigenous lands to protect them from illegal activities. While the drop in deforestation is a positive sign for Brazil's environmental policy, more efforts are needed, including traceability and transparency in the trade of commodities.
