"US Implements Groundbreaking Rule to Drastically Reduce Methane Emissions from Oil and Gas Industry"

The Biden administration has announced a new rule to cut methane emissions from the US oil and gas industry by nearly 80% through 2038. Methane is a potent greenhouse gas that contributes to global warming. The rule will end routine flaring of natural gas, require stringent leak monitoring, and rely on third-party monitoring to detect large methane leaks. The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that the rule will prevent about 58 million tons of methane from entering the atmosphere, equivalent to taking over 300 million gas-powered cars off the road for a year. Additionally, 50 major oil and gas companies, including Exxon and Saudi Aramco, have committed to reducing their methane emissions by 80-90% by 2030.
