Peru's National Emergency: Guillain-Barré Syndrome Outbreak and Immunoglobulin Shortage

Peru has declared a state health emergency due to an outbreak of Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS), a rare neurological disorder that affects the immune system and can lead to muscle weakness, paralysis, or death. Since June 2023, 182 cases have been reported in Peru, with four deaths. The exact cause of GBS is unknown, but it is often preceded by an infection. There is no cure for GBS, but treatments can help manage symptoms.
