Global Migration: From Southern Border to Maine and Beyond.
Migrants from countries such as Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Venezuela, and Colombia continue to make the dangerous journey north to the US border due to political instability, poverty, violence, natural disasters, and inequality worsened by the pandemic. Mexico accounts for the highest number of border crossings and has agreed to accept those turned out of the US under Title 42, but officials and advocates contend that Mexico is not equipped to handle the influx of people stranded there. The US is expected to roll out a new policy that will limit asylum access for migrants who crossed into the US without authorization and didn’t apply for protections on the way.
