EU Continues Business with Russia Despite Sanctions

Despite imposing ten rounds of sanctions against Russia since its invasion of Ukraine in 2022, the EU continues to do business with Russia in several areas, including trade, LNG, nuclear, diamonds, and chemicals and raw materials. The EU now aims to crack down on circumvention routes rather than seek new sanctions. The EU imported 171 billion euros worth of goods from Russia from March 2022 to January 2023, and Russian LNG deliveries to Europe increased since the war. The EU bought 1.4 billion euros worth of Russian diamonds last year and imported nearly 750 million euros worth of Russian nuclear industry products in 2022.
