Germany Prepares Troops for Potential Russian Aggression in Lithuania

Germany is permanently basing thousands of troops near the Russian border in Lithuania, in a move prompted by Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The deployment of 4,800 German troops and 200 civilians is aimed at protecting NATO territory in case of a potential attack by Russia. However, concerns have been raised about the lack of long-term funding and the absence of main battle systems, such as Leopard 2 tanks. Germany is committed to the deployment, which is part of NATO's enhanced Forward Presence battlegroups along its eastern frontier. The German units will be stationed close to the Suwałki Gap, a potential target if Russia escalates the conflict with Ukraine into a confrontation with NATO.
