The United States and Canada have imposed new sanctions on Belarus, targeting entities and individuals allegedly involved in human rights abuses and support for Russia in the Ukraine conflict. The US Treasury Department designated eight individuals and five entities for allegedly funding the Belarusian government, while Canada imposed sanctions on nine individuals and seven entities, including government officials and military manufacturing firms. Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, who has faced mass protests and accusations of election fraud, has accused the West of trying to topple him. Belarus is a key ally of Russia, and in May, Russia decided to deploy tactical nuclear weapons on Belarusian territory.
