Hungary's Tense Relations with US and Russia Highlighted by Leaked CIA Document and Sanctions

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban reportedly called the United States a main adversary during a political strategy session, according to a leaked CIA assessment. This move could further strain already tense relations between the two countries due to Orban's strengthening ties with Russia and China. The U.S. and Hungary have enjoyed close ties since the end of the Cold War, but under Orban, Hungary has slowed Finland's admission to NATO and continues to hold up Sweden's entry. The E.U. declared last year that Hungary had become "a hybrid regime of electoral autocracy" under Orban, and criticized him for promoting anti-democratic values.
