Sudan's Generals Amass War Chests, Igniting Violence and Distrust Among Civilians.

The two generals vying for power in Sudan have amassed significant economic resources through private and state-sponsored companies, which provide a source of patronage and an urgent incentive to continue their military campaigns. Military-owned companies account for a quarter of Sudan's GDP, and the Rapid Support Forces' enterprises account for about half. The military and RSF have also engaged in business dealings with Russia's paramilitary Wagner Group. The military's economic interests have made it reluctant to relinquish power to a civilian government, and any sanctions imposed to end the fighting would have to take into account the economic interests of the two generals.
