Scientists have sequenced the genome of Ludwig van Beethoven, offering insights into the health challenges that shaped the composer's life and music. Beethoven suffered from progressive hearing loss, chronic gastrointestinal problems, and liver disease, which ultimately caused his death at age 56. The sequencing project found that a gene called PNPLA3 tripled Beethoven's risk for developing liver disease, which was likely exacerbated by his heavy drinking and hepatitis B infection. The study did not yield conclusive evidence about the genetic basis of Beethoven's hearing loss.
