Kerala bucks India's population trend with aging population.

Kerala, India's only aging state, has seen a significant increase in the percentage of people aged 60 and over, from 5.1% to 16.5% in the past 60 years. This makes Kerala an outlier in a country with a rapidly growing population. While the state has invested heavily in public health and education, the movement of younger people away from the state means fewer people to care for their older relatives. Flooding and heat waves, both made worse by human-caused climate change, adds to the vulnerability of Kerala’s older people.
