Mount Etna eruption shuts down Catania airport, causing flight cancellations

Catania and Comiso airports in Sicily have been closed due to the eruption of Mount Etna, Europe's most active volcano. The ash cloud has caused flight cancellations, delays, and diversions, affecting Italy's biggest bank holiday, Ferragosto. Catania airport, which normally handles around 200 flights a day, has suspended all flights until 8 pm. Passengers are advised to check with their airlines for information. Flights are being diverted to other airports in Sicily, including Palermo and Trapani. Ryanair and other airlines have warned of possible delays, diversions, or cancellations. The eruption has also disrupted air traffic heading for Malta. Sicily's summer of travel chaos continues, as this closure follows a major fire in Catania's terminal building in mid-July.
