UN Warns of 1.8C Warming and No Good Outcomes Beyond 1.5C
A UN Environment Programme report warns that global warming will reach at least 1.8C even under optimistic scenarios, making overshooting the 1.5C Paris target unavoidable and leading to more extreme weather, glacier loss, sea-level rise, and widespread damage. It says there are no good outcomes above 1.5C and that avoiding the worst impacts requires an emergency overshoot-peak-decline pathway with rapid emissions cuts and large-scale carbon removal, plus bold adaptation to protect infrastructure and livelihoods; returning to 1.5C this century could be possible only if warming stays around 1.8C or below and carbon removal is scaled up, though uncertainties remain.
