PGA TOUR Unveils Two-Series Era for 2028 with Mega-Purses and Merit-Based Promotion
The PGA TOUR announced a two-series competitive model launching in 2028: the PGA TOUR Championship Series and the PGA TOUR Challenger Series, creating a merit-based system where roughly 130 players are eligible and about 120 compete per regular-season event. The Championship Series will run 23–24 events (February–August) including The Players Championship, four majors, Olympic golf in 2028, and a redesigned postseason TOUR Championship with match play at rotating venues, plus a fall international slate under a DP World Tour alliance. Each regular-season event carries at least $20 million in prize money and features a 72-hole format with a 36-hole cut (top 65 and ties), with no alternates or sponsor exemptions. Promotion and relegation mechanics include at least 20 Challenger players being promoted annually, a last-chance series for final spots, and eligibility updated by a single points system that preserves at least the top 90 from year to year. The season also centers on a reimagined postseason and broadening competitive stakes for players, fans, and partners.
