"Novel Acoustic Crystal with Smooth, Continuous Elastic Property Changes Proposed by Research Team"

A research team led by David Röhlig at the Technische Universität Chemnitz in Germany has proposed the creation of function phononic crystals, which have smooth and continuous changes in elastic properties instead of strict periodic variations. Their study, published in Europhysics Letters, found that even small deviations from the ideal step function of a material could cause large changes in the phononic band structure, leading to the emergence of sought-after features such as larger phonon band gaps and multiple phononic band gaps. These findings could have applications in microtechnology, mechatronics, and environmental soundproofing.
