Insufficient Funding Leaves Vulnerable Countries Exposed to Climate Change

Developing countries, which contribute less to climate change but are disproportionately affected by its impacts, are not receiving enough financial support to adapt to the growing threats. Wealthier countries have failed to deliver on their promise of providing $100 billion annually to help developing nations cut climate pollution and cope with rising temperatures. In 2021, these countries actually gave 15% less money for climate adaptation than the previous year. The United Nations estimates that the gap between the funding needed for adaptation projects and the actual public funding received by developing countries stands at $194 billion to $366 billion per year. This lack of funding hampers investments in flood defenses, drought-resistant crops, and early warning systems, leaving vulnerable communities ill-prepared for climate change impacts. The upcoming COP28 talks will focus on establishing a "loss and damage" fund to address this issue.
