Predicting Mental Health in Adolescents Using Brain Biomarkers

Researchers at the Translational Research in Neuroimaging and Data Science (TReNDs) Center at Georgia State University have identified biomarkers in adolescent brains that can predict cognitive development and psychiatric issues. The study analyzed functional network connectivity (FNC) in over 9,000 children and found consistent patterns that can predict a range of behaviors, mental health conditions, and even parental psychopathology influences. The researchers also developed a brain-wide risk score (BRS) using FNC to assess psychiatric risks, showing potential as a biomarker for early intervention. These findings have the potential to facilitate early screening and monitoring interventions for mental health issues in adolescents.
