Atrium Health moves to unify WakeMed in a $2B expansion push
Atrium Health plans to take control of WakeMed in a deal that could bring about $2 billion in new investment, expanding WakeMed's access to capital and clinical trials while extending Atrium's footprint in the Triangle. The transaction, which WakeMed’s board approved and county commissioners must vote on, would keep WakeMed as a separate entity with Atrium as the sole corporate member of its owning nonprofit, and is expected to create about 3,300 jobs amid regulatory scrutiny and concerns about reduced competition with UNC Health and Duke Health.
