Atrium Health moves to unify WakeMed in a $2B expansion push

Atrium Health plans to take control of WakeMed in a deal that could bring about $2 billion in new investment, expanding WakeMed's access to capital and clinical trials while extending Atrium's footprint in the Triangle. The transaction, which WakeMed’s board approved and county commissioners must vote on, would keep WakeMed as a separate entity with Atrium as the sole corporate member of its owning nonprofit, and is expected to create about 3,300 jobs amid regulatory scrutiny and concerns about reduced competition with UNC Health and Duke Health.

Atrium Health moves to merge with WakeMed, widening NC hospital footprint

Charlotte-based Atrium Health plans to merge with Raleigh-based WakeMed Health & Hospitals, expanding Atrium’s reach to five WakeMed hospitals and about 3,300 new jobs with more than $2 billion in investment for Wake County. The deal would reshape North Carolina’s health-care market, potentially boosting insurer bargaining power while raising concerns about higher costs without clear quality gains, prompting calls from state officials for careful antitrust scrutiny. Smaller systems see consolidation as a hedge against Medicaid cuts (HR 1), and Atrium’s “combination” structures add complexity to public oversight. Wake County’s board will vote on a transfer agreement amendment related to the deal.

Healthcare Facilities Enforce Strict Visitor Policies Amid Respiratory Illness Surge

Atrium Health in Charlotte, North Carolina, is implementing temporary visitor restrictions for children aged 12 and younger due to a surge in respiratory viruses such as COVID-19, flu, and RSV. Starting December 7, young children will not be allowed to visit patients in Atrium Health hospitals, behavioral health and inpatient rehabilitation locations, with exceptions made for certain circumstances. Atrium Health is also updating its mask policy in high-risk settings to protect patients and slow the spread of respiratory illnesses. Novant Health, on the other hand, does not currently have visitor restrictions in place but is monitoring the situation.
