PEGI initiates retroactive re-rating of digital loot box games to PEGI 16

The Pan-European Game Information (PEGI) system has begun retroactively raising the age rating of existing digital-only games containing paid random items, such as loot boxes, to PEGI 16. This change affects titles previously rated PEGI 3, 7, or 12, with updates rolling out progressively throughout October 2026. The Games Rating Authority (GRA), which administers PEGI in the UK, confirmed the rollout applies to games rated via both the PEGI Classic and International Age Rating Coalition (IARC) systems. Notable affected titles include EA Sports FC, Zenless Zone Zero, and Marvel Rivals. While the US Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) declined to adopt similar changes in March, citing potential user confusion, PEGI is enforcing these stricter standards to align older live-service titles with current criteria regarding interactive risks.

Epic Games has stated that it will enable most of these outfits to be compatible with all ratings by auto-adjusting their appearance based on the island being played on, but players have criticized the company for not implementing this feature before the age ratings update.

India Demands Content Checks from Streamers to Address Obscenity Concerns

India has requested streaming platforms like Netflix and Disney to have their content independently reviewed for obscenity and violence before being shown online. The proposal, delivered at a meeting in June, aims to address concerns raised by lawmakers and the public regarding obscene and vulgar content on streaming platforms. The government has suggested the formation of an expert panel for age ratings and content review, but the industry has objected, citing potential negative impacts on growth and employment. India's streaming market is projected to be worth $7 billion by 2027.
