Ministeria vibrans, a close unicellular relative of animals, forms stable, reproducible aggregates and activates animal-like multicellularity genes during aggregation, suggesting aggregative multicellularity was a key step in the origin of animals and provided the genetic toolkit later co-opted for multicellular development.
