FAA Unveils Bold Plan to Hire and Modernize U.S. Air Traffic Control

The FAA released its 2026 Air Traffic Controller Workforce Plan to close staffing gaps and modernize the National Airspace System through three pillars: hiring expansion, efficiency improvements, and system modernization. It targets 12,563 Certified Professional Controllers, with 2,200–2,400 new hires yearly through 2026–2028, and expands AT-CTI training programs. The plan introduces a data-driven staffing model, automated scheduling, facility-hours optimization, and AI-based simulations to reduce overtime and fatigue, accelerate training, and improve airspace management, supported by NATCA collaboration and ongoing technology upgrades across the NAS.

Blocked radio transmission causes close call between planes in San Diego

Investigators have determined that a blocked radio transmission and a distracted air traffic controller were responsible for a close call between a Southwest Airlines jet and a smaller plane in San Diego in June. The controller directed the Southwest pilots to circle around the airport while telling the SkyWest crew to exit the runway, but the transmission to the Southwest plane was likely canceled due to simultaneous communication. The Southwest plane flew 950 feet to the side and 200 feet above the SkyWest plane before landing. The National Transportation Safety Board cited the blocked radio call as the probable cause and noted the controller's distraction as a contributing factor. Another close call in San Diego in August is currently under investigation.

NTSB Report: Findings on 2022 Tulsa Airport Incident Revealed

The National Transportation Safety Board has released reports on an incident at Tulsa International Airport in 2022, where a FedEx cargo flight landed on the wrong runway. The on-duty air traffic controller did not recognize the mistake until the pilot reported being in the wrong location. The investigation revealed that fatigue may have been a contributing factor, and the incident prompted a review of the airport's tower conditions. Despite the error, the plane landed safely without any injuries or damage.
