Ethiopia’s Army Chief Blames Egypt and Sudan for Backing Rebel Alliance Amid Renewed Civil War

Ethiopia’s army chief has accused Egypt, Sudan, and Eritrea of backing a new rebel alliance seeking to oust Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. The conflict has reignited in northern Ethiopia, with fighting spreading from Tigray into Amhara and Afar. The African Union and UN are urging a ceasefire, but trust between the federal government and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) remains critically low. The dispute is compounded by tensions over the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam and unresolved issues from the 2022 Pretoria peace agreement.

Ethiopia’s cross-regional rebels form ‘Alliance for Survival’ to challenge Abiy

Seven rebel groups spanning Amhara, Oromia, Tigray and three other regions have formed the Alliance for Survival to oust Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, accusing his government of war and oppression. The coalition includes the Fano, the Oromo Liberation Army, the TPLF and four smaller groups, signaling a new phase of multi-front conflict though experts warn such alliances are fragile and unlikely to share weapons. The move comes amid ongoing regional tensions, a disputed election, and concerns over Ethiopia’s fragile ethnic federal system.
