Measles Surge in New York Amish Communities Tests Vaccine Mandate Fight
New York State is grappling with a measles outbreak in Amish communities as it battles legal challenges to its strict vaccine mandates. Governor Kathy Hochul declared a health emergency after over 100 cases were reported, many linked to unvaccinated populations in upstate rural areas. While the state enforces no religious exemptions for school immunizations, Amish families have petitioned the U.S. Supreme Court to restore such exemptions, arguing that mandates infringe on their religious freedom. The outbreak, which has spread from neighboring states, highlights the tension between public health measures and religious autonomy, with health officials emphasizing the need for vaccination to prevent further transmission.
