
Unearthing Turkey's Ancient Fault Line: Insights from Recent Earthquakes
The East Anatolian fault, responsible for the deadly earthquakes in Turkey and Syria in February 2023, formed 5 million years ago due to the collision of the Eurasian and Arabian plates. The fault created a new tectonic plate, breaking the Anatolian plate free from the Eurasian plate. A deeper understanding of the fault may help predict future breaks and vulnerabilities. The recent earthquakes were caused by a stuck chunk of crust near the Syrian-Turkey border. The research team used seismic surveys and mineral dating to determine the age and formation of the fault.
