Fremont Fire Rejection Over Homeschool Diploma Leads to Civil Service Appeal
A 22-year-old volunteer firefighter in Nebraska had his application for a paid position in Fremont rejected because his high school diploma was from a homeschool program, which the city deemed unaccredited. Despite holding a state EMT license and volunteer experience, the applicant argued the original job posting only required 'graduation from high school.' After the city retroactively added an 'accredited' requirement, the applicant appealed to the Civil Service Commission. The commission noted ambiguity in the original posting but ruled it could not intervene in city policy, leaving the applicant to potentially pursue legal action within 30 days.
