Maersk pilots wind rotor sails to cut fuel on container ships
Maersk is piloting Anemoi’s 35m rotor sails on a container ship to test wind propulsion as a way to reduce fuel use and emissions; each sail is claimed to save about 1 tonne of fuel per day and ~3 tonnes of CO2, with costs around $0.6–1.2 million per sail plus installation, and viability will depend on routes, wind conditions and tightening environmental rules.
